Day Two: Introduction to the assessment and management of Lower Bowel Dysfunction (Including ano-rectal examination)
This course is designed to introduce you to the assessment and management of common lower bowel dysfunction.
The anatomy and physiology of the bowel within the context of the digestive system as a whole, will be taught, with particular reference to the function/mechanics of the lower bowel and ano-rectum.
Identifying how this relates to clinical presentations will lead to a greater understanding of functional bowel disorders which are seen so frequently in patients with pelvic floor dysfunction, whether in isolation or combined with multi-compartmental symptoms.
There will be a practical element to the day where delegates will be taught how to perform an ano-rectal examination.
This is an introductory level course and as such aimed to INTRODUCE you to assessment of the “posterior compartment” of the pelvic floor complex, enabling you to offer a more comprehensive service in terms of assessing the pelvis as a whole and avoiding compartmentalisation . It will also enable you to gain a level of competency in performing ano-rectal examination, which will enhance your practice with certain patient populations with whom this examination may be appropriate as part of their assessment, for example 3rd and 4th degree tears, obstructive defaecation etc.
The principles of treatment for lower bowel dysfunction will be touched on but not in detail, the course will include some case studies.
The pre-requisite for attending this course is that you are able to demonstrate some form of formal learning and competency in vaginal examination and have experience with assessing patients with pelvic floor dysfunction. (ie Day1)
